MySpace – My First Rant
In 2004 I was living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and at an internet cafe on Bedford Avenue I created my profile. Marty McGuire told me it was the best way to communicate with everyone back in Florida, so I signed up and started my cyber experience. Newly single, I shared all my exploits; poetry, thoughts, expressions, links and whatever else I had on my mind I posted on my MySpace page. I even found a romantic interest through MySpace (only one which lasted 2 years). I do not recommend utilizing this online community (or any online community) for dating purposes. Although, I have heard of it working for those that are highly sexually active and do not care to keep “the numbers down”.
Over the past three years, MySpace has been interesting. I utilize it as a way to communicate with people that may be interested in contributing to Porch Magazine. It has been great for my partner with Spooky-Maceo Productions in finding bands to come play at our local venues, as well as a way to connect with Breakers for Jump Monkey: The New School of Breakdance. I was also able to help friends and acquaintances find jobs, apartments and roommates. With all the negative attributes attached to MySpace, it does have its good qaulities. The most rewarding so far, is staying in touch with friends from Jersey that I grew up with since grade school.
Now onto the dirt. Ruppert Murdock owns rights to MySpace and has created another commercial giant. So, like all media, it is getting corrupted. I hope that the artistsĀ and musicians on MySpace do not find any barriers or issues when trying to promote themselves when dealing with the complications of big corporation and big brother. Open Source networks need to stay OPEN! and not give in to money.
